Laura White - X Factor 2008 Alumni - Brand New Video: You Should Have Known
OK, first things first. Laura White (the Amy Winehouse of last year's X Factor) is releasing a debut album 9th November, and this is her debut single. We can't lie and say she don't look good, because, having come back two stone lighter, she does. That and we all know she can sang her arse off. That isn't where the problems lie.
For us, the major problem is the sheer 'heard-it-all-before' factor to the song, the admittedly substandard-and-not-shot-that-great video and the fact that she's coming out just a week before our girl Leona, who's coming with a better voice, and a much better song; the genius 'Happy'.
Laura, love, in the quickly growing and expanding UK music industry (with the likes of Roc Nation signees, the Sugababes, our man Tinchy, Ndubz, Dizzee Rascal, to name but a few) you need to come a lot harder than this. We need to be either in love with, about to love (you know them songs that grow on you), or at least feeling the tunes you're coming with. And, with the game crowded as it is, and your admittedly not great song, there's just too much noise for you to be heard above the music.
Still, with the Two Single Rule (The Two Single Rule: when an artist has either: 1: a hit followed by one crap flop of a song, they can then have another crap song but then they must have a hit, or it's curtains for their career - see Bobby Valentino. Or 2: they can have a crap debut, followed by a smash hit of a follow-up. Either one), you still have a shot. In the dark with a blindfold on, but still a shot.
